‘Parent’s Lavender’
Edition of 12
soft ground etching
paper size 24cm x 26cm
image size 12cm x 7cm
One year my Dad gave me a harvest of lavender from the bush that grows in my parents front garden. It always makes me think of my dad and my boy Finn watching dozens of bees collecting pollen from that very bush. inspired I decided I must create a soft ground etching using some of that harvested lavender.
Soft ground etching belongs to the intaglio family of printmaking processes. it involves the melting of a acid resistant wax on to a metal plate. The artist then draws through the wax revealing the metal underneath, these exposed areas of metal are eaten away when the plate is submerged in acid. Creating a line within the metal that will hold ink.
Because soft ground remains soft it can be used to capture textures, like textiles and plant matter, this is done by pushing the texture into into the wax.
